Balos Lagoon

Balos Lagoon is located 56km North West from Chania. Balos beach is one of the most photographed beaches on Crete because of its exotic scenery. Every year thousands of people visit this place to experience its wild and natural beauty. It is sure to stay a wonderful place in your memory forever. When arriving at Balos the white sand and clear blue waters take your breath away. The sea is shallow and warm and is a fantastic place for young children to play. As you go deeper in to the lagoon the water is colder and the abundance of sea life makes is ideal for snorkeling. Also Balos is a shelter for the protection of the Monkseal and the sea turtle (caretta caretta) and is under the Natura 2000 program because of the rear species of flora and fauna. There a ferries that run all summer to take you to Balos lagoon. These ferries run from Kissamos port from the morning till evening. In addition there is a primitive cafe where you can buy refreshments.
